Facilities Maintenance Technician (Custodian II)

Position Summary:

Responsible for the care and stewardship of New Life Covenant Church facilities performing a variety of routine and semiskilled tasks involving overall building and grounds maintenance, repair functions and custodial duties.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Make routine plumbing repairs (repairing leaks, unplugging toilets and drains, etc.); repair or replace restroom fixtures as needed.

  • Replace light bulbs and fluorescent lights, and making electrical related repairs (replacing electrical receptacles, etc.); minor electrical repairs such as ballast, light switch or outlets, bulb or motor replacements.

  • Perform routine carpentry work (minor paint jobs, installing doors, door stops, cabinet doors, tile, adjustable shelving, setting forms for concrete, etc.).

  • Perform preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems (replacing evaporative cooler pads, belts, pumps, air filters, etc.).

  • Maintain grounds by cutting grass, bush and tree trimming, weeding, deadheading plants, watering, and landscaping; operate power equipment to include forklift, lawnmower (riding and push), and snow removing equipment to include, shoveling, salting of sidewalks, entrances, and driveways as required.

  • Assemble and or move furniture as required; assist with the setup of facilities for services, meetings, classes, conferences, and events as scheduled.

  • Perform janitorial upkeep functions such as wash interior and exterior windows, clean blinds, shampoo carpets periodically, and wash walls at designated intervals; refill toilet paper, paper towel, sanitary napkin and soap dispensers; vacuum and clean where needed; strip, clean and wax floors; clean up spills, leaks as needed; uses custodial tools such as mops, brooms, squeegees, cleaning cloths, brushes, vacuums, and floor machines.

  • Perform general security functions such as: locking and unlocking assigned buildings, securing building when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows and unauthorized occupants.

  • Serve as a watch against dumping and vandalism.

  • Respond to emergency janitorial situations as the need arises.

  • Attend meetings as requested and necessary.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support the mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures of NLC. Perform other duties assigned.

  • Represent organization professionally in all interactions with members, visitors, and guests.

  • Perform other duties as they may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • This is a semiskilled service/maintenance position. Employees may work independently on routine recurring assignments, must be skilled in the operation of a variety of hand tools and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades.

  • Knowledge of cleaning and waxing compounds, heating and ventilating equipment, lawnmowers, irrigating systems, snowblowers, lawn, and plant fertilizers and insecticides, floor buffers and custodial equipment, and basic tools utilized in building maintenance; considerable knowledge of maintenance and repair work; thorough knowledge of proper safety techniques and procedures.

  • Possess good communication skills to discuss mechanical and electrical updates with appropriate supervisory personnel.

  • Ability to climb ladders when required.

  • Ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions, make routine decisions independently, take initiative, sustain long periods of light to moderately heavy physical activity, and work harmoniously with others.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/LICENSES

  • Minimum of 3 years of facilities maintenance, construction, or repair experience in a commercial or industrial setting.

  • High School diploma (or GED).

  • Valid Illinois driver’s license with the ability to maintain insurability.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear and walk. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate tools and controls or reach with hands and arms. Bending, pushing, moving, lifting up to one hundred pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, bending at the waist, pulling, carrying, twisting, turning, climbing ladders, seeing to assure proper and complete cleaning and read labels on products/supplies, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
